What is Hydroponics?
Hydroponics is the concept of using water fortified with nutrients to feed plants. This is accomplished simply by using a system that has the plant’s roots contained in an inert growing medium. In most cases the fortified water is sprayed, dripped or flooded around the roots. Since all plant roots require oxygen for healthy development, these systems are usually set up to feed the plant roots periodically. The systems will vary in size and simplicity, but the concept stays the same.

What are the benefits of Hydroponics and indoor gardening?
Gardening indoors or using a hydroponic system can be a very rewarding experience. Indoor gardeners, whether growing hydroponically or in soil, are simulating the outdoors indoors. However, the indoor environment; lighting, temperature, and most of all the growing season, can be controlled. Vegetables and herbs can be grown year round in your own home. There are many justified concerns about the imported produce that we buy in the winter months. As an indoor gardener you control the type of fertilizer applied and pest control methods used. If you chose to grow using a hydroponic system you will see quick growth. Most systems re automated so after set up there is very little work. No weeding, fewer pest problems and longer growing seasons are a few of the other benefits enjoyed by avid indoor gardeners

How much space would I need for an indoor garden?
Hydroponic gardening can be easily set up in very small areas, even closets. The size of your garden will depend on what you plan to grow, how much space you have available and what your budget will allow. Green and Clean will walk you through this process to ensure your gardening success.

What are grow lights and do they consume a lot of power?
Grow lights come in a number of sizes and types. The most commonly used light systems are high intensity discharge that produce the intensity and proper light spectrum to promote good strong plant growth indoors. IN others words, they come as close to the sun as you can get. These systems are popular and most commonly sold in either 1000 watt or 400 watt. Hydro rates will vary from region to region, but it is estimated that a 400 watt system that is on for 12 to 16 hours a day, will consume power costing from $20.00 to $28.00 a month. There are other options as well. Fluorescent and incandescent grow bulbs are available. These are generally used for propagation and the growing of plants that don't have high light requirements. You will need to judge what your light requirements are. To do this, the rule of thumb is that plants that grow in your garden and require direct sunlight all day long will require a high intensity grow light to do well indoors. This consideration will ensure rapid, healthy plant growth, perhaps surpassing your expectations. Further details about lighting can be found by asking one of our friendly sales representatives or reading one of the Green and Clean recommended publications.
How much does it cost to set up an indoor garden?

This would be dependant on a number of factors such as:

1. Size of area you would like to develop.
2. Type of plants you would like to grow.
3. Hyroponics or soil growing?
4. Budget? What are you prepared to spend on such a project?
With these questions answered, Green and Clean sales representatives will be able to walk you through the different options available to you. It is easy to get set up with a soil based growing system and a 400 watt light system for under $100.00. With such a package you can effectively grow up to 12 tomato or cucumber plants in the comfort of your own home.
The result of an increasing number of Canadian households choosing hydroponics as a viable food production option over the past few years has been to push down some of the costs, making it easier and more affordable for everyone to get involved.
We hope that this may have answered some of your questions and we look forward to serving you in the near future.

What can you grow Hydroponically?
Commercial greenhouses are using hydroponic techniques to produce tomatoes, lettuce, green peppers, cucumbers and many types of herbs. These can all be grown in a hydroponic system. Plants that do not grow well in a hydroponic system are root vegetables such as carrots. This is due to the fact that the root systems do not grow as large in a hydroponic system because they have their food directly delivered to them. In soil plant roots must search for their food and their roots can become as big as their foliage. It is believed that this is what makes Hydroponic growing so successful; a plant's energy that would have gone towards root development is instead going towards foliage and fruit development.
